How Often Does my Child need a Teeth Cleaning and Exam?

The American Dental Association recommends children undergo exams and cleanings every six months.

What’s the Procedure Like?

Dental Cleaning

Our dental assistants will brush your child’s teeth with a special cleaning process called prophylaxis. The toothbrush cup is filled with prophylaxis paste, which is more coarse than your standard toothpaste. After the cleaning, we floss your child’s teeth.

Radiographs (X-rays)

By taking x-rays of your child’s teeth, our pediatric dentists can diagnose hard-to-see cavities and see how future teeth are coming into the mouth. Radiographs help dentists diagnose problems early and plan treatments.

Examination

After your child’s teeth have been cleaned and radiographs were taken, the dentist will examine your child’s teeth. During this process, the dentist will check their bite, development, look for cavities, and anything else that may be of concern.

What is fluoride and what are the benefits of fluoride varnish?

Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in many foods and water, It inhibits the growth of plaque and bacteria as well as strengthens tooth enamel. After the cleaning, x-rays, and examination, we’ll apply a fluoride treatment to your child’s teeth. This specialized fluoride is only “painted” onto the teeth once every six months. To allow the sticky fluoride to work as best as it can, your child won’t need to brush their teeth that night, but will need to brush it off the following morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take my child to their first dental appointment?

We recommend getting your child in for thier first visit by age 1. The younger your child is when they start dental check-ups the sooner we are able to establish a level of trust which allows us to better serve your child's needs. We see children as early as 6 months old. Ideally, it's important to have your child seen as soon as they have a tooth erupt. Early examinations catch potential problems early. If you catch problems early, it'll save you money and stress.

Does my child have a cavity?

A tooth can be discolored for many reasons, so while not every discoloration will be a cavity, it's important to have your child seen. Cavities grow quickly and are accelerated with low dental hygiene and acidic/sugary foods. Cavities cannot heal on their own because the enamel does not grow back like skin or muscles would. If you're suspicious that your child has a cavity, schedule an appointment with us today.
